Pidgin - an original composition
I created Pidgin, a four-person percussion ensemble, as the opening number for my high school band’s spring concert. I wanted the piece to represent the connections that music creates across different cultures and parts of the world, so I drew inspiration from Latin
American music, Egyptian rhythms, American jazz, and African beats. I combined these influences into one piece, using different percussion instruments and rhythmic ideas to create a musical conversation between the four performers. I composed and arranged the entire piece myself, carefully considering how each instrument would interact with the others and how the different cultural influences could come together as one sound. I chose the name Pidgin because, like a pidgin language, the piece brings together different musical “languages” to create something new and shared. Creating and performing Pidgin allowed me to explore my own creativity while showing how music can connect people across cultures. Enjoy!
